What is Dental Prosthodontics?
Dental prosthodontics focuses on replacing one or more missing teeth with prosthetic restorations. Fixed prosthetic solutions, such as crowns, bridges, and implant-supported restorations, are the most common options. Crowns restore the visible portion of the tooth while protecting its structure, whereas bridges connect adjacent teeth or implants, filling the gaps in the dental arch.
Types of Fixed Prosthetic Restorations:
- Crowns – Designed to cover a damaged tooth, restoring its functionality and aesthetics. Crowns are recommended for severely damaged teeth or those treated with endodontic therapy. They are made from various materials, including metal-ceramic, zirconia, and all-ceramic (E-max). E-max ceramics closely resemble natural enamel, offering excellent aesthetics, while zirconia is highly durable and biocompatible.
- Bridges – Used to replace one or more missing teeth, permanently attached to adjacent teeth or implants. They restore both chewing function and smile aesthetics.
- Implant-Supported Fixed Restorations – Dental implants serve as a foundation for fixed prosthetic restorations, such as crowns or bridges. This permanent solution provides exceptional stability and a natural appearance.
Removable Prosthodontics
Removable prosthetic restorations refer to dentures that the patient can take out and reinsert as needed. These solutions restore function and aesthetics when fixed prosthetics are not possible due to severe tooth loss or bone deficiency.
- Complete (Full) Dentures – Used when all teeth are missing. These dentures can be secured with dental implants, significantly improving stability, especially in the lower jaw.
- Partial Dentures – Used when some natural teeth remain, restoring missing teeth while preserving existing dental structures.
