Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics
What is Restorative Dentistry?
Restorative dentistry focuses on restoring the structure and function of teeth damaged by cavities, cracks, or trauma. The goal is to bring back the natural appearance and functionality of the teeth using aesthetic and biocompatible materials. The most common restorative procedures include composite fillings (white fillings), inlay/onlay restorations, and crowns. These treatments not only enhance the appearance of teeth but also protect the health of the remaining dental structures.
Restorative Dentistry Procedures:
- Composite Fillings (White Fillings) – These aesthetic fillings are used to repair minor to moderate tooth damage. Composite materials chemically and mechanically bond to the tooth, providing long-lasting protection and a natural look.
- Inlay and Onlay Restorations – Used when tooth damage is too extensive for a standard filling but does not yet require a crown. These restorations are custom-made in a laboratory to precisely fit the tooth, ensuring durability and protection.
- Crowns – When a tooth is severely damaged, a crown is placed to cover and protect it from further harm. Crowns are made from materials that mimic natural teeth, such as zirconia or ceramic, ensuring an excellent aesthetic result.
Endodontics (Root Canal Treatment)
Endodontics, also known as root canal treatment, is a procedure that treats the inner part of the tooth, specifically the dental pulp (nerve), when it becomes infected or inflamed. This treatment prevents the spread of infection to surrounding bones and tissues, ultimately saving the tooth that would otherwise need extraction.
Root Canal Treatment Process:
- Removal of the Dental Pulp – The infected or inflamed pulp is removed using sterile instruments.
- Cleaning and Disinfection of the Canals – After pulp removal, the root canals are cleaned and irrigated to ensure sterility.
- Filling the Canals – The canals are filled with biocompatible materials to prevent bacterial reinfection and ensure long-term treatment success.
When is Root Canal Treatment Needed?
Root canal treatment is required when tooth decay reaches the pulp or when the tooth is injured due to trauma. Symptoms indicating the need for endodontic treatment include severe pain, sensitivity to hot and cold, gum swelling, and tooth discoloration.
