What is Periodontology?
Periodontology is a branch of dentistry that focuses on the health of the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. Periodontal diseases, such as gingivitis and periodontitis, are common, and if left untreated, they can lead to tooth loss.
Types of Periodontal Diseases:
- Gingivitis – A mild inflammation of the gums caused by plaque buildup. Symptoms include redness, swelling, and bleeding gums. If untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis.
- Periodontitis – A chronic inflammation affecting the deeper structures of the teeth, including the bone and connective fibers that anchor the tooth. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent tooth loss.
Stages of Periodontitis Treatment:
- Initial Therapy – Includes scaling and root planing to remove bacterial deposits from the tooth root surface. This procedure is performed under local anesthesia.
- Supportive Therapy – Over the course of several months, the patient undergoes regular cleanings and check-ups to prevent plaque buildup and monitor the healing of periodontal pockets.
- Surgical Procedures – If initial therapy does not produce satisfactory results, surgical intervention may be required to remove residual deposits and inflammation.
