What is Oral Surgery?
Oral surgery includes procedures such as tooth extraction, root resection, and alveotomy (wisdom tooth extraction). These procedures are often necessary when dental tissue can no longer be treated with conservative methods or when there are severe infections.
Oral Surgery Procedures:
- Tooth Extraction – The most common surgical procedure in dentistry. A tooth is removed due to extensive decay, advanced periodontitis, or severe infections at the root tip. The procedure is painless thanks to local anesthesia, and recovery takes a few days.
- Wisdom Tooth Extraction (Alveotomy) – Wisdom teeth often lack sufficient space to grow properly, which can lead to pain, infections, or cavities. Alveotomy involves removing an impacted wisdom tooth along with part of the surrounding bone to facilitate its extraction.
- Root Resection (Apicoectomy) – This procedure is used to remove the tip of the tooth root to treat pathological conditions such as infections, granulomas, or cysts that have not been successfully treated with endodontic procedures.
